Whether you’re based in the city or county, getting out to the Nottinghamshire countryside couldn’t be easier. A 30 minute drive from the city centre will take you to the heart of Robin Hood country, the perfect base for visiting our market towns or country estates. Just 20 miles north of Nottingham lies the legendary Sherwood Forest, home to Robin Hood and his Merry Men. The forest's ancient oaks, tranquil glades and winding paths offer a relaxing, calming visit. Admission to Sherwood Forest Country Park is free. There’s a small charge for vehicles but parking is free for coach parties. Groups also get free access to Rufford Country Park and the National Trust treasure, Clumber Park. The National Trust has a strong presence in Nottinghamshire, offering group discounts at all its attractions. The Workhouse in Southwell brings the 19th century back to life and follows the path trodden by the hundreds of paupers who lived and worked there. It’s open exclusively for groups on Mondays, with a discounted entry price. And Mr Straw's House in Worksop is a 1920s time capsule. Winner of the East Midlands Best Small Attraction award, you’ll find letters, photos, clothing and furniture just as their last owners left them over 80 years ago. Literature lovers should make a trip to Newstead Abbey, the ancestral home of Romantic poet Lord Byron. Or Durban House Heritage Centre - a museum dedicated to the life and work of one the 20th century’s greatest writers, DH Lawrence. For groups with kids or educational parties, Nottinghamshire’s got a range of activities to suit all ages. From learning about life on the farm at White Post Farm Park and Ice Age art at Creswell Crags, to getting the most out of their creative sides at Making it! Discovery Centre. Or if you’re looking for a more energetic experience, Go Ape! at Sherwood Pines provides fun, laughter and adventure, zipping through the trees on high wires. It’s a really different and exciting way to explore and enjoy the forest. Nearby you'll find Adrenalin Jungle in the heart of Sherwood Forest. If you need to blow off steam, try something a little out of the ordinary - from paintballing to quad biking to archery. Why not pay a visit to one of our historic market towns? Stroll around the ruins of the ancient castle at Newark, visit the dramatic Norman Minster at Southwell or look out for bargains at Mansfield’s 700 year old open market. You’ll find the perfect group activity waiting for you in Nottinghamshire. Just click on one of the suggested itineraries from the left hand menu. Or for other 'day out' suggestions, see our good for groups section.
